Fears and Phobias

Eliminating Fears and Phobias

The definition of a phobia is “a persistent, irrational fear of a specific object, activity, or situation that leads to a compelling desire to avoid it”.

It’s important to know that when someone has a phobia, it’s not his or her fault and it’s not something they can just “deal with”.

When you have a phobia, you experience an intense fear of something that poses little or no real danger. Because there is no real danger, your fear is not based on reality and is considered by everyone to be an “irrational fear”, but it is as real as any “rational” fear, to you! It can, in some instances, make your life a misery.

Phobias can be treated, helping a person have a full and healthy life. However, when the object of the fear is easy to avoid, a person may decide to do nothing and try to ignore it, rather than get treatment. Not getting treatment, though, can cause the phobia to manifest in different ways and cause a disruption of their life at a future time. A phobia may present itself and they would have no idea why it started and it becomes very difficult to treat with standard psychotherapeutic techniques.

You can also look at a phobia as an unconscious automatic response to some stimulus, stemming from a misperception of that stimulus. Scientists say that only two fears are inborn or naturally instinctive, the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. All the rest are learned! And anything that has been learned can be un-learned.

Phobias usually have their beginning in your youth, however traumatic experiences, such as serious accidents or injuries can be the cause of phobias that form in adulthood. Most phobias can be put into two main categories:

Social phobias, which are fears involving other people or social situations, such as:

  • Public speaking (generally viewed as the #1 or 2 phobia)
  • Performance anxiety.
  • Fears of embarrassment in public, such as eating in public.
  • General social phobia, also known as social anxiety disorder.
  • Specific social phobias, which are cases of anxiety triggered only in specific situations such as being unable to urinate in a public bathroom.

And

Specific phobias, which is a fear of a single specific panic trigger such as:

  • Spiders,
  • Dogs,
  • Elevators,
  • Water,
  • Flying, etc.

Phobias vary in severity among individuals. Some individuals can simply avoid the subject of their fear and suffer relatively mild anxiety over that fear. Others suffer full fledged panic attacks with all the associated disabling symptoms. Most individuals understand that they are suffering from an irrational fear, but are powerless to override their initial panic reaction.

The Ten Most Common Phobias

  1. Arachnophobia or the Fear of Spiders.
  2. Social Phobia is the fear of being evaluated negatively in social situations, Such as Public Speaking. Social phobia is a very common phenomenon, which is usually characterized by frequent cases of anxiety and depression.
  3. Aerophobia or the fear of flying.

How I use hypnotherapy to help eliminate your phobia…

While you are hypnotized, I use “use “PARTS THERAPY” to,

Find the part of you that has the phobia.

Regress that part to the first time you were aware of the cause of the current phobia.

Using various hypnotic therapeutic techniques, desensitize you about the fear, allowing you to function free of the phobia.

You will then be taught self-hypnosis techniques to reinforce your new found freedom.
