Stress is a normal part of life. Stress in not good or bad it just is. If you have gone on a vacation, been married, planned a party; all good wonderful events… that can be and are very stressful. Stressful things that other people deal with quite easily may overwhelm you. When stress is intense or persistent, it can become detrimental to your physical and emotional well being. Stress increases when people think they can’t cope effectively with all the demands placed upon them. Many things can cause you stress; politics, noise, air and chemical pollution, poverty, unemployment, boredom, change of job or residence, marital problems, economic problems, Christmas shopping, the list goes on and on…
Experiencing stress doesn’t necessarily mean you have problems. Just by being alive you will necessarily experience different levels of stress. When you feel that you can’t cope effectively with all the demands being places upon you, your stress level may become intolerable. When you are under stress, your:
- Heart rate increases.
- Blood pressure rises.
- Breathing becomes rapid and shallow.
- Adrenaline and other hormones are released into the blood.
- Liver releases stored sugar into the blood to meet the increased needs for survival.
- Pupils dilate to let in more light; all the senses are heightened.
- Muscles tense for movement, either for flight or protective actions.
- Blood flow is greatly constricted to the digestive organs.
- Blood flow increases to the brain and major muscles.
- Blood flow is constricted to the extremities.
- The body perspires to cool itself, since increased metabolism generates more heat.
This physical response to stress is appropriate and necessary if you are confronted by some physical threat to your life. But most often in the society we live in, stress is triggered by a situation which may be stressful but not life threatening. Even your emotions, ideas, memories, thoughts and expectations can trigger the same stress response as if you were being physically threatened.
